Travel is on My Mind

I think something’s in the water… or the humid Floridian air. Both my daughters have been out of their element. Bee has become clingy, holding on for dear life ~ to my arm, leg or any seemingly available body part. She has a new found fear of, well, everything. Her screams are deafening and the world comes to a sudden halt at every fear, especially in the car. Butterfly is forced onto the back burner. I did manage to get in these pictures:

Cinderella 1

Speaking of Butterfly, she’s been openly attached to my breast. The nursing is never ending and the sleeping doesn’t come as often. One minute she is crawling around the house, laughing and trying to put everything in her mouth. The very next, she’s chasing me like she hadn’t seen me all day and I was the only way to curb that urge.

I get it… and you probably do to… they are in a phase, a passing period. Yet, it’s equally exhausting to know that this may last a while. I hope that it ends soon. I barely got this picture of the kids before church on Sunday:

Kids 0814 2

I have been walking and thinking and thinking and walking trying to decide how I want to proceed. Last week was so rough I considered going back to work for the first time. This week was better, but still hard. What I know is I need a break, a physical actual break from the girls on a regular basis and not just once in a while.
Walking with Walkadoo ResultsMy walking has benefited my Walkadoo. When I started, I was walking about 6,000 steps per week. Now I’m up to a wonderful 14,000 steps a week. I’ve enjoyed using my Pebble a lot. I look forward to putting it on every morning, just to see how well I did that day. I’ve looked forward to mingling with the community at the website and them encouraging me and answering the Walkie Talkie questions. I also look forward to seeing the little green trail of lights on the device letting me know how far I’ve traveled.  I haven’t traveled as far as I wanted to. My progress has more than doubled over the past few weeks, yet I’m still about 2,000 steps a day. Far below what I should be during my journey. I’m disappointed and somewhat ashamed. I AM proud of losing weight over the last few weeks from eating well and drinking tons of water.

I’m ready to be the new me. As much as I want to rush it, I can’t. Life just doesn’t really work that way. Change takes time, especially when you’re talking about changing yourself.

During my short walks, I’ve been able to learn more about me, what I want and where I want to be. Ultimately, I know at least for a while, I want to be somewhere else. I have a wedding in California next month… until then, I will be dreaming of far away places in this week’s #AskAwayFriday.

What is #AskAwayFriday? Well…
#AskAwayFriday was created by the amazing Penny from Real Housewife of Caroline County as a way to connect with other bloggers with a great Q & A session of 10 questions and 10 answers! By offering a wonderful opportunity to get to know others while allowing others to get to know you and of course there is also the added bonus of making great friends along the way which is one of the best parts of this online world! Now to welcome our wonderful #AskAwayFriday hosts… NEWAskAwayFridayHost550

Tamara from Tamara Like Camera, Tiffany from Mrs. Tee Love Life Laughter, Christy from Uplifting Families, Stacey from This Momma’s Ramblings and Amber from Bold Fit Mom

Kelly Michelle ArtThis week, I’m pairing up with the lovely Kelly of Beauty of Resilience. She is a Christian, writer, teacher, and artist. She is a firm believer in the beauty of life. She has a beautiful Etsy shop which shares encouraging words and great printables like the one to the right. Check her out.

We decided to exchanged questions about Travel. Getting away sounds perfect right now!

Kelly

1. What is the farthest place you have traveled? I’m not sure if Frankfurt, Germany or London, England is farther, but I’ve been to both in the same trip. Frankfurt was more emotional because of the Jewish graves that we visited.

2. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? A week ago, I would’ve said France, but now I think Italy. I really want to indulge in real Italian food.

3. What is one vacation spot you would love to visit? Alaska. I would love to take an Alaskan cruise. I’ve been close to the equator, now I would love to see what it looks like in the complete opposite direction.

4. What is one local place that you like to visit? How local is local? I’d like to check out Key West and/or Cape Canaveral if we’re talking about a little drive. If we’re talking about within the city, I was looking at a two hour cruise that included scuba diving about five miles away.

5. What is your favorite activity to do when on vacation? Drink and eat… are those activities? I have to admit while on vacation, I really just want to relax. I don’t mind during the touristy things (I LOVED La Louvre), but most things for me are exactly what I dreamed them to be, so I’d prefer to get into the culture. When I went to France, I spent most of the time with the locals, checking out the bars, eating home cooked food, and just enjoying the city as they enjoyed it, rather than hitting up the attractions.

6. Is there a place that you think looks cool to go, but also looks like a lot of work? I would love to go to Mt. Everest, but there’s no way that I could climb it. Let me rephrase… there’s no way I’d want to take the time out to train to do it, nor the time to actually climb it. If it were a one day thing, I’d be down. But I’d prefer to take a helicopter and dropped on a high point!

7. When’s the last time you took a vacation? Where’d you go? I’m trying to think of when the last time I went on ‘vacation’ with no other purpose than to relax. My last trip was to South Carolina to take my son to visit my mother. Before that, it was my sister’s graduation. All of that said, I think my last relaxing vacation was a few years back when we took a cruise to the Bahamas. I think that’s four years ago.

8. What’s the closest tourist attraction that you’ve never been to? I won’t talk about Florida, since I just got here. In California, I never went to the San Diego Zoo or Yosemite… both HUGE sites of attractions. I don’t do much with the outdoors and never thought about going. I went to SeaWorld but that’s only because I sang there. I never went outside of our choral competitions (yes, I would love to be on Glee!).

9. What was the farthest away that you’ve traveled without your family (parents, spouse or child)? In high school, I had the opportunity to go to Europe. My French teacher took a trip every other year, and I desperately wanted to go. In my negotiations with my parents, I went with out presents until graduation. It was a steep price to pay. What happened was I went without any purchases on my behalf until after high school graduation. There were many great stories to tell about that trip, many included in pictures that had been “lost” since. I’m not sure it was “worth it”, but it was definitely an awesome trip!

10. What place had you dreaming while you were in school, but you have since gone? At one point I dreamed of the Caribbean vacation, which sandy beaches and relaxation galore. I have been to those beaches, which are beautiful, but with kids, relaxation was not at the forefront. Now, I dream of more active cations… I would like to visit China or Japan and immerse myself in their culture.

That’s all for tonight. I hope that your week has gone a LOT better than mine! Don’t forget to check out Kelly’s page and see her answers these questions.

Good Luck to Toni and this will be a great journey to read along with!”

Me-to-We

Jessica chose Gratitude vs. Mindfulness from Reflective Mama. “I love her take on concentrating on the “now”. Today, I think many of us tend to get super busy with “distractions” such as emails, text messages, etc. whenever we have that “free moment.” I think we need to unplug during the day and appreciate the “now” around us like the baby giggles or even taking time to smell the roses. Awesome post and great reminder on living in the now!”

latlongsign_pinterest1

Becky chose Fall Dollar Store Craft Contest from My Pinterventures. “I loved this post because it’s fantastic idea. So many DIYs consist of things that are expensive. I love a good, cheap, craft and can’t wait to see what happens with this link up. I may even give it a whirl!”

strawberry-rolls-5

Blog Profile Pic

Kimberly chose How To Create An Awesome Blog Profile Picture from Barbie Bieber and Beyond – Raising Girls. “I have been using the Google+ widget to provide a profile pic on my blog. But I have been wanting to change it up for some time now. This post showed me the perfect way to do so using Canva. The tutorial tells you how to upload the finished product in Blogger, but if you are a WordPress user like me, you can still get it done.”

#Pizza Favorites and a little #DIY with Creative Style {12}

Weekly ProgressI have finally taken my Walkadoo and done some REAL walking! I’ve hit my goal every day this week but yesterday. What I am loving about my Pebble with Walkadoo is that my goal changes each day, and changes based on my walking pattern. I don’t exactly know how they do it, but the first day, the goal was the 10,000 steps, which I found was a LOT for me! LOL! Then it slowly adjusted down to about 400. Yep, I was only walking 400 steps in a day. Then meeting the goal started meaning something. It meant I was REALLY lazy if I didn’t hit the 400 step goal. At 10,000 it seemed insurmountable, yet at 400, I said I could do it. Each day, it seems that it slowly goes up, which means that at the end of the day, I do a little extra walking even if it’s just in circles around the house. I actually look forward to wearing it everyday! Find out more about Walkadoo here! You can link up more devices to the site! Come join me at Walkadoo!

Now, I didn’t hit my goal yesterday because… well, I don’t have a legit reason. I was tired. It was my son’s first week back at school and my our first week with TWO cars! I thought once both my husband and I had our own cars, it would make life easier. Yet, this week was the roughest week since I became a stay at home mom. My husband is out the door with our son at 8 a.m. My son gets out at 3:30 p.m. whose school is almost 30 minutes away, and they are still working on making sure that the dismissal is smooth, yet hasn’t taken less than 20 minutes to get through the line. The longest wait time was an hour and a half.

What did NOT make it easier was that my daughter had to go to the bathroom on two of the days, which required me to park and get out of the car, then get back in line to pick up my son. One day, I was so lucky that she held it on a third day. We’re finished potty training people!

When all is said and done, I’m alone with two under three for about 11 hours a day, and with the third the last three hours. Needless to say, it’s been a high stress week! Please give me ideas on out to make 11 hours seem fun (for me, not them)!

But I’m so happy to be back here for another week. Come, link up, stay a while and check out some other posts, and make some new friends!

Being a fitness instructor, water is very important to me and I’m always looking for ways to jazz mine up. I will definitely be returning to this post for great ideas!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

April chose 8 Scriptures Every Mother Should Know from The Microwave Girl. “As a stay at home mommy, the whirlwind that is round the clock motherhood can get to the deepest parts of you. It’s important to remember who are children are and why they are here.” We have to remember that our children are the blessings in our life.

selling-junk-consignment-ebay-amazon-donate-organize-space-closet-ideas-tips-4-1024x682

golden-oreos-final1

Chelsea chose Frozen Golden Oreo Treats (Great After School Treat) from Domestic Mommyhood. “I absolutely LOVE Golden Oreos! This looked like the perfect Just-Because-I’m-a-Mom treat, forget the kids! Only thing I would change is to keep the Oreo filling! That’s the best part! But, I can’t wait to try these yummy snacks!”

Praline Sauce by Yesterfood

Karen chose Praline Sauce from Yesterfood. “This recipe for Praline Sauce is so simple and would make an ideal gift. Something to think about for this Christmas!”

Katy chose 7ish Things You Should Know About Twins from Mommie and Wee. “As a mama to twins myself, I can relate to several of these! As a tall woman who loves her milk, I guess I set myself up for the crazy. 🙂 In all seriousness, I get asked a lot of questions about my twins because they are such polar opposites. Not only do they look absolutely nothing alike, but their personalities and strengths are completely different. And it looks like one of my little men is going to be a lefty! It’s always nice to connect with other twin mamas, because there is nothing quite like having two little ones running about. It really takes one to know one. “

blogger-image--1272672491

Victoria chose Selfish Mom Moments from Working Mom Magic. “I chose Selfish Mom Moments because I can totally relate. As a mom of three small boys, I try to be as unselfish as possible. However, sometimes moms need some times to themselves.”

10559687_253108964813363_6731495601263375442_n

Stacey chose To the Cashier Who Called My Child Naughty from Organized Chaos. “I find it sad that, somewhere along the line we have lost the teachings to treat others as you would like to be treated! To cause a little one to question himself and whether or not he is “naughty” or not, just by making a thoughtless and uncaring comment is not acceptable. Thanks for sharing!”

Frugal-Pinableimage

Sandy chose Large Family Kitchen: Save Money & Time With Bulk Foods from Aspired Living. “I love to save money, especially on groceries. I am grateful for this reminder of how to save money when buying in bulk and how to save time by re-packaging those bulk items you purchase.”

things-people-say

Natasha chose When Sleep Goes Awry from Just A Touch of Crazy. “Great post…and so true! I don’t know the last time that I had a full, uninterrupted sleep – probably right before I found out I was pregnant lol. If my son sleeps in his bed, it’s not all night – he ends up in my bed at some point. Which means I wake up and see him standing next to my bed. Or wake up because I’m kicked or slapped in the middle of the night. Or wake up because he’s snoring next to me. Either way, I don’t sleep. And I’ve somewhat gotten used to it.”

5-Summer-Lunchboxes-001

Natasha also chose 5 Creative Lunchbox Ideas from A Mom’s Take. “With my son only being 3, I have to be ever so creative with his lunchbox options. He just likes what he likes, and unless I am relatively creative, he probably won’t try it. Thanks for sharing some great creative lunchbox ideas!”

8 Ways to Make it Easy to Share Your Posts

8 ways to make it easy to share

I am a co-host on several blog hops: Creative Style, Turn it Up Tuesday, and CLIMB. One of my purposes of starting the blog hop is to help my readers and followers grow.

But I can’t.

Let me rephrase.

It’s hard to. Why? Well, you came to the right place, because I’m going to tell you. Here are 8 Ways to Make it Easy to Share Your Posts

1. You don’t have share buttons on your blog posts.

I want to share your POST, not your site. I start at the top and scroll and scroll to the bottom and the only social media buttons are the ones on the side of your page. It’s great that you have social media buttons, but how do I send it to my friend or post it on Twitter? I have to cut and paste bits and pieces, then go to the different sites. If I’m reading the one-off occasional post, sure, but I’m trying to read anywhere between 50 and 100. Those seconds cost me valuable time away from my family. There are hundreds of social media buttons that you can use in the WordPress Repository. Please use one.

NOTE: Yes, I can use Hootsuite or Buffer, but non-bloggers don’t typically have these tools.

2. Your Share Buttons Don’t Work

When you click on the share button, the sharing site may open, but the box is blank. This is normally because you haven’t set up the sharing buttons in the settings. Each one has it’s own settings, so I can’t walk you through, but take some time to familiarize yourself with them.

3. Your Share Buttons Only Have a Link

My favorite sharing site is Twitter and I often only see the pre-filled link in the tweet. Depending on my time constraints, I will sometimes choose not to share because I don’t have time to fill it in. Yes, the link to your post is probably the most important part of all sharing, but you need it to have context, especially when many permalinks shorten the title. So, when you title your post “How to Stop Eating Everything in Sight”, it may be truncated to “eating-everything-sight”, which may or may not be the crowd you’re looking for.  On Twitter, a good share button would be Title of Post, link and YOUR twitter handle. I use Shareaholic and it is all automatic. I can just add in a thought or two and press share!

[Tweet “Are your posts shared? 8 Ways to Maximize Sharing of Your Posts – 100lb Countdown – http://go.shr.lc/1osVuo5 via @100LBC”]

4. You’re Missing Your Twitter Handle

When you are sharing on Twitter, you want to make sure that you have your twitter handle attached for three reasons:

(1) You want to see who’s sharing your posts! You want to be able to interact with those who sharing your posts, especially the newbies and your frequent sharers!

(2) I love Shareaholic, which I mention frequently in this post, but why are you allowing your readers to give them a shout out every time they post something? Make sure you change the settings to include your Twitter handle instead of theirs.

(3) Having no Twitter handle means that your readers’ followers can’t quickly find you either! The point of sharing is so that your content reaches your readers, their followers and hopefully their followers. You want to cut down on the work for everyone! Putting your twitter handle in the tweet makes it easy for everyone to contact each other quickly!

5. Your Site Doesn’t Work Well in All Browsers

Have you taken a look at your site in other browsers? In some browsers, the sidebar ends up on top of the text, the share buttons don’t function, the graphics don’t show up, and some other issues too. Some sharing buttons don’t work well on Chrome, my preferred browser. This means that I have to open a new browser to share your post. Sometimes, I do, sometimes I don’t. I’m sure that others skip it too. I have found that Shareaholic to be the most consistently working sharing buttons. I’m sure there are others too. Take the time to see what works and does not work in all browsers.

6. Your Pin Description is Blank

Pinterest is my second favorite sharing site! I love to share all posts, and work to find an appropriate board even if it’s not my “typical” post. Yet, time and time again, I pin a picture, only to have it blank or with the picture name, sometimes something vague like wpid-1030-d034.jpg. This means I have to back to the site and get the proper name of the picture and type it in. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t. A proper description should be the picture title and your website name. Make it for readers to know what they’re getting.

7. Your Pictures are Missing a Watermark and/or Title

Yes, this may be a pain sometimes, especially for those who don’t use graphics frequently, but you MUST have at least one “pinable” graphic on your page. A pinable graphic is one that has your site name (either as words or a watermark) and the title or purpose of the post. (Example: Title of post may be “My kids drive me crazy”, but the purpose of the post may be “5 Ways to Keep Your Kids Busy”). Titling your post is a different subject matter all together, but I have seen many pinable pics that don’t match the post name. Why is this important? Because when you’re looking at the vast amount of photos on Pinterest, you want to know what’s going on with the post before you click on it. If you don’t have an accurate description and your picture isn’t watermarked with a title, people have no idea what your post is about.

8. You Only Have Facebook and Twitter as Share Options

You’re on every social media platform, but your share buttons only include Facebook and Twitter. You are taking the time to cultivate followers and build content on each of the platforms. Make it easy for people to share your content on the platforms that you use! Where do you want your posts shared? Have more options than less.

BONUS: My Least Favorite Sharing Buttons

I think this is a default for Blogger or maybe WordPress, but I have found it often to be guilty of all of these above, and I rarely share when I see these buttons because the information is not pre-filled for me.

No More Baby Daddy Drama with Turn it Up Tuesday {47}

Welcome to the 47th week of Turn It Up Tuesday!

Only a few more days left before the start of the school year. I’m patiently waiting and anticipating my son starting his new school and me getting back to a regime. I love the freedom of the summer, sleeping in and going wherever I’d like whenever I’d like with all my kids (or none since my in-laws are off as well). Yet, the schedule of the school year is freeing. Things get done in order and on time… or a little late, because who isn’t constantly rushing. That said…

This week’s topic is “Back to School”. Share your back-to-school posts here (and your non-back to school posts – no one is excluded) this week! Each of the hosts and guest hosts will be selecting 2 posts this week! That means you’ll have double the chances to be Featured and win Best of the Best!

Thanks so much to everyone that joins us each week and makes this blog hop the best that it could be!

Link up your funny stories, DIY posts, recipes, mommy moments — anything at all, as long as it is family-friendly. We want to laugh, be entertained, be inspired, and have a good time!

zucchini-roundup1-1024x1024

Katy chose The Ultimate Zucchini Recipe Roundup from Mommy on Demand. “I have been on the hunt for new ways to get my toddlers to eat zucchini during their veggie strike. This round up has some great recipes that I know they’ll love, and a few fancier options that I can make for the adults!”

Blessing-Bag-Kits

Cindy chose Blessing Bags – Keep on Hand for those in Need or Donate to Homeless Shelter from Thrifty NW Mom. “I love this! Our old church had a large outreach to the homeless community and even a Saturday night meal and church service for them. Throughout the year we would gather items similar to these bags to reach out to people we saw on the streets…and invite them to church. Now that we are at a different church, I still need to be reaching the homeless and needy of our community in a tangible way and this post reminded me of that.”

Baby-Daddy-Drama-333x500

Victoria chose I Can’t Take It Anymore! Tips to End Baby Daddy Drama from Epic Mommy Adventures. “I chose this post because it is something that I can personally relate too. When reading the post I could see that there was real life experience put into the post and those are the posts that I really love to read.”

FF-No-stress-attitude-potty-training-797x1024

Becky chose A No-Stress Attitude About Potty Training from Fruitful Families. “I loved this post because it is totally how I feel about potty training and we only trained one. I didn’t let it stress me out, and we really just waited until our son was ready. This post is a great read for moms!”

Jillian also chose this post. “I chose this post because we are reaching the time when we’ll be needing to potty train my son and this has great ways to keep it a stress-free experience.”

freezer_biscuits_1-657x1024

Sandy chose Homemade Freezer Biscuits from Ten At The Table. “I think having these freezer biscuits on hand will make our busy school morning a little bit easier. Just put them in the fridge the night before and pop them in the oven while we are getting ready. I can’t wait to give them a try.”

Rhonda chose I Can’t Take It Anymore Tips to End Baby Daddy Drama from Epic Mommy Adventures. “As a single mother who has raised a daughter and dealt with baby’s daddy drama, the tips are very insightful and will help eliminate unnecessary stress. Great advice.”

kleankanteen

Kelly chose My Five Camping-with-Littles Must-Haves (And ONE thing you’ll never need!) from Mommy Life after PhD. “I chose this one because I think it is wonderful for everyone to be out in nature and enjoying time with their families, but many people wait “until the kids are bigger”. I think these suggestions are helpful to show that you don’t have to wait.”

blogdepression

Stacey chose 14 Tips for Coping with Depression while Raising Children: Guest Blogger Jenessa from Mothering {In Real Life} from Chaos & Kiddos: Mommy’s Survival Guide. “Jenessa wrote such a beautiful and heartfelt post! Struggling with depression myself, she offered many wonderful ideas to help muddle through those difficult times, especially when trying to raise healthy and happy children. Our children still need us no matter how we feel, and so many of her tips were completely spot on in coping with depression and raising children.”

marry

Kimberly chose 10 Funny Marriage Proposal Disasters from A Kaleidoscopic Dream. “I am a sucker for a unique marriage proposal story. The ones that turn out opposite of how they were planned are the best. The ladies at A Kaleidoscopic Dream did not disappoint with these picks. Hilarious!”

10006955_371306733012332_1813280966_n

Jessica chose No, He Doesn’t Wear A Ring. from Blessed in Alabama. “How true! My husband and I have been married 4 years August 9th and I can happily say that he does not wear a ring,,, and surprise! Neither do I. His reason is because of his job. My reason? I lost weight (LOL!!). However, we are still happily together and the ring does not define our marriage – our trust and love for each other does. Thanks for the post!”

Chelsea also chose this post. “I chose this post because I think it really proves a point. People get so caught up in appearances and what others think of them. It was a nice refresher to know that someone out there is living freely, and doing what works for them. I especially liked it because I can certainly relate. Although I am not married as of yet, my boyfriend of 6 years obviously does not wear a ring. I do, but it’s a promise ring. Hah! I always get shade from people saying that it’s not equal for me to wear a ring (and say I’m off limits) but he is not. So, I was happy to see what she had to say.”

briolette

Kelly chose You’re Going to Love This! from Woods of Bell Trees. “This was my favorite because I love the whole “Swap and tell” idea. It is a great opportunity for business owners, like me. It sounds like a really fun concept.”

Better Blogging: Who Are You? by Katy at Chaos and Kiddos: Mommy’s Survival Guide

Tenns writes: This post is a go-to for any blogger, but especially the ones struggling to post or find there voice. As with anything, its easy to get burnt out and not want to do something, and blogging can be just that way too. Its great that there are resources like this post for bloggers to go to when they’re feeling this way.

Brittnei writes: I’ve never seen DIY boxes like this before. I like how they sell boxes that give you all the ingredients to make your own homemade products with the instructions. Typically, when you want to do a project or make your own products, you have to run around trying to find the products so this is a great idea.

Working Out with My Favorites ~ #AAF {Echo from Domain of the Mad Mommy}

This week, Butterfly went from “oh, I will move from here, to right next to here” to ALL OVER THE ENTIRE HOUSE! I’ve been busy chasing her around, especially out of the kitchen and bathroom… because what do babies want more than the cold floors of the kitchen and the bathroom? I’m very surprised at how much time and effort my two little one take. These girls are like two large dogs who are ready to go outside and play all of the time! Whereas, my son was like an indoor cat, only even stretching occasionally. Who said boys were harder?

Anyway, on to #AskAwayFriday…

What is #AskAwayFriday? Well…
#AskAwayFriday was created by the amazing Penny from Real Housewife of Caroline County as a way to connect with other bloggers with a great Q & A session of 10 questions and 10 answers! This week, I pair up with the hilarious Echo from Domain of the Mad Mommy. She is open, candid about all things mommy and life. One of the funniest parts of her blog is “Random Thoughts” which is self-explanatory, yet the title doesn’t begin to explain the hilarity of the posts! Go check her out!

Echo

1. 100lbCountdown is such an awesome name for your blog and I love the reason that you started blogging. Do you think blogging helps you in moving towards your goal? I know it did when I started. Then, I had two beautiful baby girls, which completely threw me off track! I changed the focus to more just family friendly posts. I do think when I really need to post something health related, I try to think about what would help me in the here and now, like my Walkadoo post.

2. A rose by any other name… If you had to change your blog name, what would you choose and why? I’ve been thinking about this FOREVER! Well, not forever, but since I was pregnant with Bee and I stopped eating healthy and succumbed to all of my pregnancy cravings of all things sweet. I’ve already purchased my name, which is April Noelle, and I’ve slowly started changing my FB, Instagram, Pinterest, and Vine to that name. I’m trying to determine if I want to manage multiple blogs, since I want to start one focusing on women and their lives, in other words, one that’s more than me. I’m also considering using my name as the URL and something else as the name of the blog… like A Diamond in the Flesh, April’s Hope, April’s Logic or Halls of the Grant Family. I don’t know what I want to do or how I want to do it yet. As you see, I’m the queen of indecisive.

3. You are a lawyer, but have never practiced law. Do you think you will give it a shot after your kids are grown? I don’t know yet. Since I moved, it’s been a whirlwind. I’m still trying to decide about where things are headed, my blog is doing well, and a side business is promising. Although I miss the aspect of law, and I think my skill set is really important in the industry, I don’t know if taking the bar is the right step for me. Ask me again when both girls are in school full time.

4. Let’s talk health. What is your FAVORITE healthy recipe to introduce people to? People have such a wide variety of taste buds. I don’t give people a particular recipe because some people love lasagna, others, burgers and still others chocolate. My primary suggestion would be to add vegetables to every meal… yes, I said EVERY meal. Find a vegetable you like, and eat it. But to give you a recipe, here’s a super simple one.
[amd-zlrecipe-recipe:4]

5. If someone was just starting their journey to get healthy, what is the most important piece of advice that you would give them? Keep it simple and take it slow. You didn’t gain the weight overnight. You won’t see the results over night. Of course, there are ways to quickly drop the weight, but there’s something to be said about earning the weight loss. Also, there’s a reason we grab fast food. Because it’s easier. Just because it’s fast and easy, it doesn’t have to be bad for you. See the recipe in #4.

6. What is your FAVORITE way to work out? With others. I’m a terrible self-motivator when it comes to working out, but have a friend that says or is willing to go for a walk, do a video, or anything active and I’m completely down!

7. Happy Wife, Happy Home. What is your favorite guilty pleasure? LOL! Watching television. I can’t say it’s a guilty pleasure anymore. I admit it, it’s a television addict! It’s even on when I work out!

8. I have days where my kids stay in pajamas all day and I try to be as lazy as possible, just because. Do you have days like that? Uhhh, I only get dressed if I have to go out! Actually I’ve started to change that for my husband’s sake. I’m sure he wasn’t happy seeing me in my pajamas in the morning to come home to the same look. Otherwise, I love doing it and I think I did it from Sunday to Tuesday this past week! It’s summertime! I try to let the kids be as lazy as possible, but since he has three book reports due on the first day of school, and he takes piano lessons (which we pay for), I can’t be that lazy as a parent. Otherwise, anything goes!

9. What is your dream vacation destination? I would love to return to Europe as an adult. I want to check out Italy and Greece, eat the food and just wander for hours on end! I wish I could show you pictures of my trip, but the were lost. 🙁

10. TEN Favorites:

Movie: Groundhog Day
Song: Let’s Chill by Guy
Restaurant: my last one was Red Lobster, but that was years ago. I love trying new ones.
Dessert: German Chocolate cake
Nail Polish Color: none… but if I have to choose one, navy blue
Hair Style: anything that keeps my hair out of my face.
Article of clothing that you own: none, I really need a new wardrobe! Wait, I have this black dress that has made an appearance at many events and I look great every time.
Animal: cheetah… but no personal ones.
Painting: interesting, can’t think of one
Beverage: water or wine

A Broken Heart {#FTSF}

We all have amazing bodies… I can tell you about giving birth to four children, losing and gaining weight, withstanding sports injuries, and even the fact that most of my scars are barely visible. But I’m not.

Today, I’m going to share a story of one beautiful child’s body.

This story of a newborn… His mom’s labor was uneventful… as uneventful as a labor can be, until a fever kicked in and the risk to having a VBAC was putting both of them at risk. After contemplation and discussion, a second cesarean was performed on the mom and a beautiful baby boy popped out.

This was no ordinary baby boy. This boy had hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which means he was born with an underdeveloped left side of the heart, basically the left side is non-existent.

hypoplasticleftheart

Luckily the mother knew about this condition, and was prepared. She was prepared as you could be knowing that her child would have open heart surgery on day seven of life. The mother was told that her child would need three surgeries, each of which have a 25% fatality rate, throughout his life. He would not play sports, he would likely not be an active child. Even if the surgeries were a success, a host of other related problems could occur:

  • Blockage of the artificial shunt
  • Serious infections
  • Chronic diarrhea (from a disease called protein-losing enteropathy)
  • Fluid in the abdomen (ascites) and in the lungs (pleural effusion)
  • Heart failure
  • Irregular, fast heart rhythms (arrhythmias)
  • Strokes and other nervous system complications
  • Sudden death

This baby spent his life in the NICU (newborn intensive care unit), being cared for by nurses, and being visited by his own parents.

The early days

As planned, on day seven, his skin and rib cage were opened from neck to belly button in order to access the heart. The surgery was seven hours… and his parents patiently waited in another room. His broken heart was repaired but not whole.

The surgery was a success! A stint was placed in his heart so that the right side would be able to do the functions of both sides. He looked peaceful in his bed, with his chest pulled apart, a piece of plastic covering the opened area, as the swelling decreased. He was mostly sedated and on a breathing machine, but otherwise did not struggle. All of this was normal.

post op

As the days and weeks passed, his rib cage fused, the staples holding the two pieces together could be removed and the skin sewn back together.

He was all one again… yet he was more than one. He was my son. He lived a total of seven weeks, but his body endured more than most do in a lifetime.

the final days

Read more HERE.

This is the first year that I did not remember him on the day of his passing. I don’t yet know how I feel about that. I miss him dearly and wish I could hold him one last time.
